Why memorable beats gibberish
The common advice “just use a random string like xK29!fQz” fails one test: humans. You end up writing it on a sticky note, reusing an old password, or resetting it every month. A passphrase solves this differently — instead of fighting your memory, it works with it.
A password like Brave-Tiger-Storm-42 has real entropy because the words are chosen at random by your browser, not by you. Humans are terrible at picking randomly — we gravitate toward pet names, birthdays, and sports teams, all of which appear in cracking dictionaries. Random word selection removes that bias entirely.
The trade-off is length: passphrases are longer than random strings of equal strength. That is fine for almost every modern login form. Where a site limits length, fall back to a random 8-character password instead.
How to use a passphrase well
- Generate 4–5 random words above. Add a number and symbol only if the site allows — they help with forced-complexity rules, though the word count is what carries the entropy.
- Use a unique passphrase per account. A password manager remembers them; your passphrase only needs to be memorable for your master password.
- Never “improve” a generated passphrase by swapping in meaningful words — that re-introduces dictionary bias.

Are word-based passwords actually secure?
Yes — security comes from randomness, not from looking random. A 5-word passphrase drawn from a 1,000-word list has about 50 bits of entropy, comparable to a 9-character random password, but far easier for humans to recall. The key is that the words must be chosen by a secure random generator, not by you.
How long should a memorable password be?
For most accounts, 4 to 5 random words (with a number if you like) is a strong, memorable choice. For high-value accounts like your email or password manager master password, use 6 or more words.
